Strategic Planning - Objectives, Goals, Strategies and Measures (OGSM)
Client: A global medical products corporation. Business spans a variety of categories and types of customers.
Business Situation: The company has experienced sustained, strong growth based on its continually enlarging and improving product portfolio. With its robust outlook the company identified the need for a better strategic planning process to manage its growing business and corporate size.
Business Need: Management concluded that it needed a more rigorous and structured planning process as it reached another significant increase in size. Three key needs were identified:
- Integration and alignment across business units and down through the organization, so that all employees were working against common objectives.
- Longer term planning to extend the annual focus that was consistently placed on this fast growing business.
- Integration of the financial and operational plans.
Why CCC was hired: The companys CEO had observed a successful implementation of strategic planning using OGSM and wanted to use this proven technique. OGSM is an integrated, robust method for developing and deploying strategy to align an entire organization. It combines financial and operational planning processes, provides metrics for measuring opportunities and progress, and guides resource allocation to the key priorities. CCC was recommended to the Client by a current P&G Officer. CCC Senior Consultant Tom Meyer had extensive experiences at P&G and Hewlett Packard leading organizations through strategy development and deployment using OGSM. Tom has also successfully led strategic plan efforts for other CCC clients.
Consulting Project: The overall goal was to adapt P&Gs OGSM approach to the companys operational and financial planning. Specific outcomes included a new strategic plan for the company and an implemented process that they could continue to execute annually. Tom led company management through a rigorous analysis of their business, organizational capabilities and opportunities. A company level OGSM was created to focus on high growth areas. The OGSM was deployed throughout the organization and Tom assisted many of the company business units in developing plans to deliver their parts of the overall OGSM.
Consulting Outcome: The company has a growth oriented OGSM that is deployed and aligned across the entire organization. Tom assisted the company is developing the processes and procedures to continue this rigorous planning process on a going basis. The strategic planning work by CCC uncovered opportunities to bring about cultural change in the organization to better match the new direction of the OGSM. Going beyond the original project, Tom helped the company create revised competencies for recruiting, growing and evaluating employees, and assisted in changing their performance planning and evaluation system to align with the OGSM and the new competencies.
