Significantly Increase Financial Analysis Capability

Client: North American Product Supply F&A organization for leading global Premium Drinks business.

Business Situation: Client had recently experienced significant failures on investments in new products, sourcing and capacity. Further, the client was facing numerous additional new product launches and related Product Supply sourcing decisions. The CFO wanted to improve future outcomes by significantly increasing F&As leadership role and functional capability from one consisting primarily of accounting and budgeting to one in which Product Supply Finance personnel would serve as project CFOs responsible for maximizing shareholder value creation on all future investment decisions.

Business Need: Significant changes in the Product Supply F&A organization were planned and executed by the CFO, resulting in numerous new hires. The CFO also needed the following to transform and develop the organization:

  1. New F&A policies, procedures and guidelines relating to project financial analysis.
  2. Development of standard financial models and training templates to illustrate best approaches for analyzing project NPVs and performing risk/opportunity analysis.
  3. Training programs for F&A organization to achieve best in class F&A capability/expertise. This to include financial analysis training, model training, risk analysis training, and a separate finance course targeted at non-financial managers to increase their understanding and improve their interface with F&A.
  4. Professional guidance and mentoring for financial analysts working on major investment decisions during the training and development phase until the organization had achieved the targeted level of capability and experience.

Why Robert Hunt (current CCC Consultant) was hired: The CFO, a former P&G employee, was familiar with Robert Hunts experience in investment analysis, developing financial analysis standards and models, and in training P&Gs global Finance organization in how to evaluate all types of business decisions. Robert Hunt was P&Gs guru for all financial analysis topics.

Consulting Project: Robert Hunt was hired to perform each of the four steps outlined under Business Need, above.

Consulting Outcome: The project was extremely successful, resulting in the development of a highly professional, effective and respected Product Supply F&A organization. The client was so pleased that a separate project was later undertaken to develop the North American Innovation Finance organization in a similar fashion. Subsequent projects were also undertaken for completed for Corporate headquarters staff and the African F&A organization.
