The “Mining” of Emerging Markets

Emerging markets can be a mine for any company. For some, it is indeed a gold mine of revenues and profits. For others, they are a mine field that leads to losses and a hasty retreat. The difference is purely in approach..how one enters and goes about doing business in emerging markets.

Operating a business in a developed market, and one in an emerging market, are two different things. Emerging markets bring new challenges, and new levels of challenges not seen in developed markets. Finding and developing, and retaining local talent, whilst reducing the dependency upon expats is one element. Another is the challenge of controls and governance, and how to protect corporate assets and people. And all of this is before you have sold the first case! The challenges continue, with fragmented trade structures making distribution a tricky task to achieve. And marketing, and understanding price points and the value sweet spot are key when your consumers are earning at most only a few dollars per day.

Come in prepared, and these markets can be a gold mine of new revenue growth, and even surprisingly for many, at higher than average margins! This is because the pool of knowledgeable, experienced, hands-on management is less prevalent than in the balance of the world. So when you get it right, you win, and you win BIG.
